Having knowledge of what particular drains, traps and vents do can benefit the long term sustainability of your plumbing system. Most houses these days install a similar drain system where a main water line comes in near the foundation of the home before being connected to the water heater. However, it can be difficult to understand which drain, trap or vent you should install, and if you aren’t sure you can always call Plumbers Swiss Cottage who will assist you.
Most people don’t understand what a drainage system does and don’t necessary think too hard about how the water they put down the sink exits their home. Each fixture that requires the use of water has a drain line which then connects to the main line. Most people take the trap for granted, however; it is the most important part of a drain because they prevent sewer gases from being released back into your home. To connect a trap, you need a nut which connects the trap with a threaded fitting which then forms the seal.
Vents are another important component of any drainage system since they allow water to exit drains easily. In modern society, most houses implement a roof vent which is often made from heavy grade rubber, sheet metal or lead.
Furthermore, every effective drainage system must have a slope which means that drainpipes are angled so water can flow through it easily. Without a slope, the water would just stay in the same part of the pipe until the drain starts overflowing. The recommended slope for a pipe to guarantee that water gets released properly is a drop of 0.25 inches per foot.
